Why is My AC Freezing Up During Summer?

It's the middle of July in Paducah. The temperature is pushing 95 degrees with 80% humidity. You walk to your thermostat because the house feels warm, only to discover that your air conditioner isn't blowing cold air. You check the indoor unit and are shocked to find the pipes and coils covered in a thick layer of solid ice.

Finding a block of ice on your HVAC system during the hottest time of the year seems like a paradox, but it is actually one of the most common issues we encounter. When an AC freezes up, it completely stops cooling your home. Understanding the physics behind why this happens can help you prevent it from occurring in the future.

The Physics of a Frozen AC

Your air conditioner doesn't "create" cold air; it removes heat. The indoor evaporator coil is filled with extremely cold liquid refrigerant. Warm air from your home is blown across this coil. The refrigerant absorbs the heat, and the newly cooled air is pushed back into your rooms.

For this process to work, there must be a constant, steady flow of warm air over the coil. If anything disrupts that airflow, or if the refrigerant pressure drops, the temperature of the coil plummets below freezing. When that happens, the natural humidity in the air condenses on the coil and instantly freezes into ice.

The Main Culprits Behind a Frozen System

    1. Severely Restricted Airflow

This is the number one cause of a frozen air conditioner, and fortunately, it's usually the easiest to fix. A clogged, dirty air filter acts like a wall, preventing warm air from reaching the evaporator coil. Without that warm air to absorb, the coil freezes. Blocked return vents, closed supply registers, or crushed ductwork can also cause this exact same issue.

    2. Low Refrigerant (Freon/Puron Leaks)

It sounds counterintuitive, but low refrigerant actually makes your AC run colder. The refrigerant operates under high pressure. If there is a leak in the system, the pressure drops. According to the laws of thermodynamics, a drop in pressure results in a drop in temperature. The coil gets too cold, freezing the ambient moisture.

    3. A Failing Blower Motor

The blower motor is the fan that pushes air through your ductwork. If the motor burns out, or if the fan belt breaks, the air stops moving entirely. The outdoor compressor will continue pumping cold refrigerant to the indoor coil, but without the fan to blow warm air over it, the coil will freeze solid within hours.

    4. Dirty Evaporator Coils

If you have been running the system without an air filter, or with a poorly fitted filter, dust and pet hair will bypass the filter and stick directly to the wet evaporator coil. This layer of grime acts as an insulator, preventing the coil from absorbing heat from the air, leading to a freeze-up.

    What You Should Do Immediately

If you discover ice on your system, you must act immediately to prevent severe damage to the compressor. Never attempt to chip or scrape the ice off with a tool. The refrigerant lines are thin copper or aluminum and can be punctured easily, turning a simple service call into a massive repair bill.

    Instead, follow these steps:

    • Turn your thermostat from "Cool" to "Off".
    • Turn the Fan setting from "Auto" to "On". This forces the blower motor to push warm indoor air over the ice, melting it safely.
    • Check and replace your air filter.
    • Place towels around the indoor unit, as a massive amount of water will drain off as the ice melts.

Once the ice is completely thawed (which can take up to 24 hours), turn the AC back on. If it freezes again, you likely have a refrigerant leak or mechanical failure and need to call Ironclad Comfort Solutions.
